Towing Electric Vehicles the Right Way

EV towing means moving an electric car without letting its wheels turn on the road. In most EVs the motors are tied straight to the wheels. Spinning them while the car is off can create heat and current in the drive system. That is why we tow every EV on a flatbed. Call (469) 224-5738 7 days a week.

We tow Tesla, Rivian, Lucid, Ford Mustang Mach-E, F-150 Lightning, Chevy Bolt, Hyundai Ioniq, Kia EV6, BMW i-series, Porsche Taycan and other electric and plug-in hybrid models.

When an EV Needs a Tow

  • The battery ran to zero and there is no charger in reach
  • The car shows a drive system or high voltage warning
  • The 12-volt battery died and the car will not wake up or shift
  • A tire is damaged and the car has no spare
  • The car was in a crash
  • It needs to go to a service center that is far away

How We Load an EV

First we try to put the car in tow or transport mode, using the screen or the steps in the owner manual. That frees the parking lock so it can roll. If the car is fully dead and stuck in park, we use wheel dollies or skates so no wheel turns. We winch it onto the deck using the approved tow points and strap all four wheels. See Flatbed Towing for how the deck works.

Many EVs are heavy and sit low, with a battery pack under the floor. We never lift or strap against the pack. For low or high-value EVs, we use the same care as Exotic Car Towing.

EV Towing in North Dallas

Our area has a lot of EVs, from Highland Park and Preston Hollow driveways to Uptown and Turtle Creek garages. Garage calls often need dollies because of tight space, so see Parking Garage Towing if your car is below ground. We tow to Tesla and other brand service centers in Dallas, to independent EV shops and to your home charger.

Ran Out of Charge?

We do not carry portable chargers. If your EV is at zero, we tow it to the nearest fast charger, your home or a service center. If only the 12-volt battery is dead, a Battery Jump Start on the low-voltage system may wake the car up. Never try to jump another car from an EV.

After a Crash

A damaged EV battery can heat up hours later. After a wreck, we load the car on a flatbed and tell the drop-off site it is an EV so it can be parked away from other cars. See Accident Towing for the full process.

What to Have Ready

  1. The make, model and year
  2. Whether the screen turns on and the car can enter tow mode
  3. The key card or phone key
  4. The drop-off address, such as a service center or charger

EV Towing Cost

Price depends on distance, the vehicle weight, whether it can roll and whether dollies are needed. We quote before we send a truck.
